Memorial Day

I can remember as a child in the 1960’s riding with my mom & dad  through cemeteries in Red Wing, Minnesota on Memorial Day and looking at the flags.  I especially remember Calvary Cemetery for some reason?

Wikipedia says it well… Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war.

I have 3 GGGrandUncles who died in service during the Civil War I remember on Memorial Day… two didn’t have the chance to marry and have children.

My Civil War Veteran GGGrandfather Eugene Warren Ripley’s older half-brother Francis Alden Ripley died at Andersonville Civil War Prison in GeorgiaFind-A-Grave has good information on Francis or Alden as his friends called him at Andersonville.  A survivor wrote about their time in Andersonville for a local paper in Otsego County.  The Otsego County Genweb Site has included it on there site.  Francis had family and I’m sure his descendants think of him also.  The Cemetery where his wife and two  of his children are buried was just down the street from Glen Highland Farm.  I was so glad to be able to visit and add pictures to their Find-A-Grave Records.

Day 2 of FrontPage to WordPress

Well I managed to get published and I managed to get the name changed from beachside.org to www.beachside.org. Also got pages added and a submenu added..hopefully I’ll be able to remember it all the next time I work on it! 🙂 Between Google and poking around I’m managing. They say learning new things is good for your brain.

About www.beachside.org…

I’m rebuilding www.beachside.org, I’m really new at WordPress so please bear with me!  I hope to get all I had on the old website back on here and I REALLY hope much much more.  Aunt Betty’s Photo Album most of all as that was a favorite.

The photo above is the home place where my mom grew up in Le Center, Le Sueur, Minnesota.

The background which you can’t see much of so I’ll add it below is in Oneonta, Otsego, New York along the Susquehanna River;  my dad’s family the Chauncey’s and the Ripley’s both came from Otsego County.
